Discipleship? What's that?

At Cornerstone, discipleship is an ongoing and transforming journey following Jesus into truth, experience and relationship. The goal of discipleship is to help a person grow from salvation to spiritual maturity, fulfilling God's purpose for their life and impacting the world for God's kingdom; helping them become increasingly like Jesus, spiritually mature, prepared for service and actively involved in ministry. This continuing transformation involves redemption, reconciliation, healing and growth, so discipleship must promote these experiences. Because we are concerned for the spiritual well-being of our members, we urge everyone to engage in this process of intentional discipleship.

Our process is three-dimensional: the structure is based on truth, the disciple's progress is based on experience, and the context is relationship. The educational dimension involves conforming the disciple's mind to the truths of God's Word, including relevant first-hand applications that promote true growth. In addition, there are specific experiences that serve as progress indicators, experiences that are desirable for every healthy and growing disciple. Also, discipleship is not a solitary experience, because it only happens in relationship with other believers. Therefore, discipleship will be effective only if it is a careful balance between education, personal experiences and close relationship with other believers.
